When did your fascination with the fashion aesthetic begin?

As a child I was interested in art and would make sculptures out of anything that was lying around. As I found my way this translated into fabric manipulation, I think I will always be inspired by art in my designs. Fashion came later for me, I never looked back once I found that fashion was the perfect channel for my creativity. I do still prototype in card and other materials which are then transferred into print designs.

As a creative, how important is it to live life joyfully?

I am very much an emotional person – I think you find most creatives are! I design with my moods, sometimes in my most darkest moments, great ideas come out, for example the “spined” collection was designed when I was going through a really tough time. In the same way, designing can lift my mood and when I am happy I can also be at my most creative. Obviously we all get moments of destruction that affects our performance, but I have learnt to use this as my advantage.

Out of all the cities you have lived in, which one inspired most and why?

I studied at Parsons in Paris and it was here that I started my fashion journey and really learnt the french way, which still inspires my designs, I soaked up the culture and love the elegance of how women dress. This influence can be seen throughout my work but ultimately, London is the city which has truly nurtured me and my aesthetic and gives the greatest inspiration and hope to my work.

After the Parsons graduate show, did you know you would get this far?

No! I don’t think anyone can predict what the future will hold, I have worked extremely hard and have always known that fashion is a tough industry. I am constantly thinking of new ways to push my brand and keep things new and exciting. I think if I had known what lay ahead I would have been apprehensive! This past couple of years have been full of great surprises and hopefully I can continue as I am, who knows what lies ahead!

One can say your collections have an inclination towards “lines”, both straight and curved. Is that an element that has a personal significance?

As i said earlier, art has a big influence on my work so this is where the fascination with lines comes from, especially as much of my work is architecturally based. I love cubo-futurism and graphic shape.

Tell us about your experience or intriguing moments while working with Lady Gaga and Beyonce?

It is always great to know that anyone likes the brand, let alone modern day icons! Beyonce actually bought the leggings in a shop in LA called curve so it was a nice surprise seeing her wearing them!

Are we soon to see a boutique?

Not soon! Obviously that would be the ultimate dream but I am happy at the moment just being able to sell in such great stores, globally.

Any possibility of a mens collection in the not too distant future?

I love menswear and tailoring is apparent in my womenswear, I love the detailing of menswear and think I would enjoy the challenge of trying something new and exploring more tailored pieces.

How important is music in fashion, can one survive without the other?

Music and fashion definitely go hand in hand and it is nice when I can work with artists, especially on stage costumes or on music videos, this is when I can be truly creative and give the pieces life! I love the whole theatre of working with musicians and meeting interesting people in a different industry.

Who would you say is your fashion hero, could be a designer or persona?

Isabella Blow- she really understood the fashion industry and was an inspiring and hugely talented woman.

London has many tucked away places, mind sharing one with us?

I live near columbia road and always pop into the Royal oak after a long day at work, a typical English pub, it makes me feel relaxed, I can just wander in there with my jeans and t-shirt and feel comfortable!

Since 1950, Earl Norem has painted hundreds of memorable covers for novels, gaming books. Over his five-decade career following decorated service in World War II, Norem has produced illustrations for magazines.

DIAZ LAZARO INTERVIEW!

An extravagant man, a genuine New York character and his artisan crafted jewelry is proof. – DK

Please tell us a little bit about your roots?

I was born in Havana, Cuba in 1962, moved to America in 1968 as a refugee and by 1980 I was already starting to design jewelry. I was lucky enough to know from a young age what I wanted to do. My focus and passion was always on jewelry and metals, and being dyslexic (as well as living in an era where dyslexia wasn’t really understood), school just wasn’t my thing. I opened up my first store in SoHo over 20 years ago.

If you can remember, what attracted you most when you were an adolescence?

A big influence on me was ancient history and mythology, as well as the culture and the music of the 60′s & 70′s.

If you could preach one particular message to the world, what would it be?

Love and express yourself.

Is New York responsable for a lot of your inspiration and how?

New York is such a fast-paced, creative, energetic environment, I can’t help but be inspired by it. The best thing about New York is that I really feel like I can be myself here and that individuality is valued.

Your creations have a strong relationship to ancient Greece, Arabia and India. These cultures clearly have a hold on you, why?

Always felt a connection but could never explain why. Past lives, maybe?

Who were the most interesting celebrities to have worn your creations, any inside stories to tell?

Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, whom we actually named a ring after, and Perry Farrell from Jane’s Addiction. He and his wife Etty are beautiful people inside & out. We recently did a photo shoot with Georgia May Jagger, Mick’s daughter, and she was a total sweetheart as well.

What is your reaction when people say that your jewelry creations mimic “Chrome Hearts”, or the other way around?

When you show people silver jewelry everybody has to refer to something. In reality, we both started at the same time and have similar rock & roll influences. When we were both starting out, magazines would often mix-up our credits, but as time has passed I believe we have both come into our own and developed an even more individualistic sense of style.

Do you feel that “Lazaro” is evolving into something grander than what it already is. Do you have any new endeavors?

We’re focusing on building our web presence and product database on the internet which is doing phenomenal.

Is the clothing line also designed entirely by yourself?

I design all the t-shirts with our in-house graphic designer and the rest of our staff gives input. We also carry unique designers from Japan, London, The Netherlands, Los Angeles and New York.

Which is your absolutely most proud creation, there must be one that always pleases your ego?

I could never pick just one. Right now, though, I’m really proud of this new sacred geometry dog tag that we just finished:

Where do you like to spend your quiet time in NYC?

The few hours of quiet time I do get a week I like to spend at home, relaxing.

Slab Vases by “Form Us With Love” February 18, 2012

Form Us With Love and Spanish stone company Cosentino present a project exploring the quartz surface Silestone. Silestone Slab Vases were showed at the exhibition Form Us With Friends at the Swedish Museum of Architecture during Stockholm Design Week. The project aims to break away from the familiar slab form and explore the material’s tactile dimension.

The Slab Vases consist of rings of Silestone, which have been slipped over a metal bracket to create a sculptural vase. The rings vary in size and are cut so the shape of the vase changes with each assembly.

Form us with love is a design studio operating from Stockholm. The internationally acclaimed studio was started in 2005 and has since pushed to challenge the conventional through design initiatives.

Fuwl partners with companies involved in the development and production of everyday objects, furniture and lighting.

Partners & Spade, established in 2008 by Andy Spade and Anthony Sperduti, is a storefront and studio on Great Jones Street in the NoHo neighborhood of lower Manhattan. The studio produces films, books, apparel and conceptual products as well as marketing and branding projects for select corporate clients. The storefront, open on weekends to the public, presents a constantly re-imagined group show of artwork, objects, collections and ideas generated by an ever changing cast of collaborators.

The shop is continuously changing and is meant to be a space of discovery, a place where every visit is distinct. The shop grew naturally out of the founders’ creative process and serves as a showcase for art, objects, and unusual projects. On any given day one may find for sale a half-eaten celebrity sandwich on a plate, a t-shirt designed by 10-year-old artist Marika Thunder, a custom fixed gear bike by Benedict Radcliffe, or unique pieces by visiting artists such as Mike Mills, threeASFOUR, Ted Muehling, Kim Hastreiter, Mark Borthwick, and Tobias Wong.
